I read Where Shadows Linger, the second installment in the Intertwined Souls series, in one single sitting, all 640 pages of it. This superb novel held me firmly in its grip from the very first chapter, and it didn't let go until I had devoured the very last word. Riveting indeed. Then I read it again, savoring each scene this time, lingering here and there, allowing myself to get lost in the world created by the very talented Mary D. Brooks.
The view of Sydney Harbour from the ship is magnificent. And it's full of promise… We follow Eva and Zoe from war-torn Europe all the way to Australia, the land of plenty, where they hope to find a fresh start. Together and in love, they are ready to face the challenges that await them. They'll meet new friends and they'll grow stronger, but the shadows of their past have managed to track them down to the other side of the Earth. Old enemies and fears resurface and reopen old wounds that were never fully healed… Thus the journey continues.
Where Shadows Linger is a novel about courage, about hope, about love. The different plot threads are delicately woven and flow like a symphony, taking the reader along at a steady, smooth pace. This is also a brilliant study on characterization. Eva and Zoe, already solid characters in In the Blood of the Greeks,are here depicted so vividly that they are perceived as real. We get to explore the many different shades of their personalities and the strength of the loving bond they share, and it's such a beautiful thing to watch… There are quite a few new characters as well, just as clearly and firmly built, who add color and interesting developments to this fantastic story.
