Letters from Liberators — US soldier Elmer Joachim Writes About Dachau Concentration Camp

Last month I watched the series “Band of Brothers” which was set during WW2. Episode 9 had one of the most powerful scenes I have ever seen in a tv show. The Americans liberate Dachau concentration camp.

The US Holocaust Museum has posted Letters from Liberators On May 3, 1945, US soldier Elmer Joachim recorded his reactions to visiting Dachau after liberation. The letters have been scanned and you can view below the video. POWERFUL. MOVING.

Watch:

In April and May 1945, Allied forces liberated thousands of prisoners from Nazi concentration camps. Soldiers who had read and heard reports of Nazi crimes now confronted the evidence first hand. Shocked, angered, and horrified by what they saw, they recorded their observations in reports to their superiors and letters home to loved ones so as to ensure that others would know the truth about what they had seen. Historic film footage, artifacts from our collections, and oral histories provide further documentation of liberators’ experiences at the end of World War II.

What is A Widgie Knight About?

a-wIDGIE-KNIGHTIt’s 1950 and Zoe Lambros is a young Arts College graduate who has found work in the Sydney Art Gallery as a junior art restorer. She has also attracted the unwanted and offensive attention of Sebastian Fletcher, one of Australia’s greatest artists. Zoe is not one to take a backward step, but she finds herself unable to fight back without losing the job she loves. No one is going to believe the young artist’s claims against an Australian icon. Enter Zoe’s lover who has decided to take matters into her own hands and is eager to take on the role of Zoe’s defender.

A masquerade ball offers Eva Haralambos, Zoe’s dark-haired, blue eyed, six-foot tall peaceful and gentle partner, the chance to metamorphosize into a tattooed, leather clad Greaser on her own intimidatory mission. Can the tender, kind-hearted Eva become a tough Widgie Knight for her lady in distress?

This Intertwined Souls Series Shorts volume also features a journal entry for the night by Zoe. It’s late evening and Zoe has taken her journal to write about Eva’s efforts to defend her honor. Zoe reflects on the woman that she loves and how Eva transformed into her knight. Eva reveals who she imitated to achieve the intimidating figure she became.

New Interview With A Difference…Zoe Talks

montage3Sallie’s Book Reviews blog interviews authors about their books. Sallie suggested I do an interview with one of the characters of the Intertwined Souls Series.

Interesting.

So I chose Zoe (who as we all know is not short of a word).

Interview with Zoe Lambros by Mary D. Brooks, author of In the Blood of the Greeks has now been posted on Sallie’s site.

What questions are there for Zoe to answer?

1. Tell us a little about yourself and your background

2. Do you have a nickname?

3. How did it feel when you first realized that you had tender feelings for someone that you hated so passionately? I don’t imagine that it would have sat comfortably with you, knowing that anything you feel, you feel strongly

4. Did you wrestle with this new feeling that was incompatible with your existing attitude towards Eva and was it a conscious choice to allow that feeling to gradually develop?

5. Was there a definite point that you can identify where you yielded to love and decided to let any remaining hatred towards Eva be washed away by that love?

6. Let’s talk about Eva a bit more – When you think of Eva, what comes into your mind?

7. It’s obvious they didn’t succeed since you’re with Eva now, right?

8. What makes you laugh out loud?

9. You have a motorcycle but you no longer ride, are you ever going to ride a motorcycle again?

10. When you think of home, what’s your favorite memory?

11.  What is the best Christmas present you have given to Eva?

12. What’s next for Zoe Lambros?

2016 Xenite Retreat and Writing Workshops

writerworkshop1In April I attended the first Xenite Retreat and the following is my in depth report. I briefly covered the entire retreat and made mention of two workshops I conducted.

Workshop 1: Small Press and Indie Publishing. It was great to meet people who were interested in publishing their work and having lunch with them. Our group had a lively discussion about the differences between publishing with a small press publisher or going all out Indie. The feedback was amazing. Thank you to those who attended.

Workshop 2: Creative Writing: When Your Imaginary Friends Speak To You…this was a lively group and for once I actually followed my own outline (small injoke that my editor will fully appreciate) and went through the process from initial idea to getting ready to publish. It was a full on two hours and the discussion with those present was superb. The handout included an outline of topics and a link to more resources and software. Exclusive to the Xenite Retreat!

Overall it was a great experience for me on my first outing as a presenter.
